About The Programme

Our Programme started with only 2 trainees in 2001 to an intake of an average of 5 trainees. Through our 3-year training Programme our objective is for the trainee to obtain high competence on SAICA competencies, our Programme also focuses on exposing trainees to different business units which equips trainees with high business acumen, the ability to operate under diverse working environments and innovative thinking.

The Programme gives trainees practical training in financial management, management decision-making and control, accounting and external reporting. You will also gain residual technical competencies in auditing and assurance, internal audit, risk management and taxation. Our rotation plan is a summary of the MTN SA and MTN Group business units which is structured for first and second year trainees. We encourage trainees to drive their own development and structure their rotations to suit their interests and career objectives.

As one of our trainees, you'll experience the day-to-day complexities and challenges of a corporate environment in the telecoms industry. Your ability to move across diverse business units will give you holistic insight into how the business operates.

Our programme is offered mainly at our MTN Head offices in Fairlands, Randburg. The possibility of rotating outside the Fairlands office is also available.

 The MTN CA Programme offered me the opportunity to have the most memorable and fulfilling 3 years of articles. From the rotations to the culture of the company. The 3 years at MTN as a CA trainee afforded me the opportunity to know myself better and uncover things about myself that I now cherish and consider to strengths.The ball is always in your court on what you experience and learn- no two trainees had the same rotations or experiences, you are encouraged to be yourself. I was fortunate to go on a rotation in MTN Uganda for 3 months which the company afforded me.Whether in MTN SA; MTN Group or MTN Uganda, one thing rings true- the culture of MTN is one of community and opportunity. If I had to choose my training office again- I would definitely choose MTN again.

 The MTN CA Programme provided me the opportunity to gain an extensive view of the ICT industry by rotations through different business units. This has enabled me to deepen my learning and broaden my perspective. I made strong networks and interacted with diverse colleagues forging relationships along the way. The programme has provided me with the necessary soft skills and training to complete my Articles and Board Exams During the CA Programme I completed a rotation in Dubai with MTN GlobalConnect. This gave me valuable insight to the international wholesale business.

 The MTN CA programme is a rotation-based programme, I have developed the ability to quickly learn and adapt to different teams. I was able to be involved in many different work streams at a very senior level.Completing articles at MTN has given me a unique set of skills, that set me apart from other CA’s, largely because telco is a very singular and relevant industry. FAQs

What are the electives and residual skills in Commerce and Industry?

SAICA requires trainees to amass several competencies to qualify as a CA(SA). The compulsory competencies are Accounting and External Reporting.
Elective competencies in the MTN SA CA Training Programme are Financial Management and Management Decision-Making.
Residual competencies include Auditing and Assurance, Taxation and Risk Management.You are exposed to these competencies as you rotate through the different business units.

Does MTN cover relocation costs?

MTN SA does not cover relocation costs.

Does MTN offer study leave? And does MTN pay for Board fees?

We offer generous study leave.
We cover both board exams as well as the board course.

What is a rotation plan? Do we choose our own rotation plans? What are the potential rotations?

A rotation plan is a summary of the business units and competencies you will be exposed to as you grow in the programme.
We typically have an unstructured rotation system. This allows trainees to drive their own development and structure their rotations to suit their interests and career objectives.
We do offer a structured rotation plan to first year trainees, but they are still encouraged to be active in the planning process.

When does my employment contract start and where would I be based for the duration of the training contract?

Your employment contract with MTN SA is a 3-year training contract that begins on the 1st of February.
Trainees are based at the MTN head office in Fairland, Johannesburg.

What is the CA Programme retention rate?

We develop our trainees to be part of the MTN family at the end of their training contract.
